  5.     The capital city of Mogadishu resembled a charnel house last
  6. week after victorious rebels drove President Mohammed Siad
  7. Barre into exile, ending 21 years of dictatorial rule. Dogs
  8. devoured hundreds of corpses in the streets following a
  9. month-long campaign that killed more than 5,000 civilians and
  10. forced tens of thousands to flee. Starving survivors had only
  11. fetid river water to drink, and looters reduced shattered
  12. buildings to empty shells.

  14.     Barre fled the city in a tank minutes before the insurgents
  15. stormed the presidential palace. He reportedly escaped into
  16. neighboring Kenya, where authorities said they would grant him
  17. temporary asylum.

  19.     Prospects for the new government in Mogadishu seemed bleak.
  20. The coalition of rebels, which represents three Somali clans
  21. that have feuded for centuries, named hotel owner Ali Mahdi
  22. Mohammed, 52, interim President until elections could be held.
  23. But Mahdi's party, the United Somali Congress, grew angry at
  24. his appointment by a clique of elders and attacked the action
  25. as "hasty" and "unnatural." The tenuous troika could swiftly
  26. come unglued.
